I love London. ❤️

Just walking along Upper Street in the bright sunshine ☀️🚶😎🚶🏼🌞🚶☀️🚶🏼😎🚶🌞🚶🏼☀️🚶😎

Suddenly, out of nowhere, 200+ young teenagers all on bikes came streaming down the street en masse behind us. Many doing wheelies. All weaving in between the cars and buses - it was like a swam of ants flooding the street - obviously on some prearranged jaunt. It was quite a sight to behold.

🚲👦🚲👦🏻🚲👦🏼🚲👦🏽🚲👦🏾🚲👦🏼🚲👦🚲👦🏽

Within a few minutes they had all disappeared off.

Then a few minutes after that, the thundering roar of a large pack of Hells Angels on deep-throated motorbikes all dressed in leather came thundering down the same thoroughfare. It was deafening. But also incredibly exciting.

🏍️😈🏍️👹🏍️👿🏍️👺🏍️😈🏍️👹🏍️👿🏍️👺

They too disappeared off.  Thundering round Highbury Corner and up the Holloway Road.

The Mark Ashley Centre…

Last night I had the utter pleasure, delight and privilege of attending the 20th anniversary celebration of Positive East (the HIV charity in Stepney) that also saw the renaming of their building as The Mark Ashley Centre.

Mark supported the charity a lot when he was alive and continues to do, as the charity is a beneficiary.

The night had drinks, food, DJ, and lots of laughter.

It was attended by a 100 or more people involved with making Positive East the success it is today along with many of Mark’s friends and family.

It was an emotional night full of love; both for the charity and for Mark.

Mark would’ve been in his element.

We are all proud to have known him.
To have loved him. ❤️
The renaming of the building in his name is a beautiful thing. ❤️

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning…

Last night, Tim and I went to see Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (or M:I:VIII as no-one is calling it) at the Vue in glitzy Islington.

Meh.

We’re both big fans of the MI series and have both seen all previous seven films - so we were predisposed to love it. Sadly we didn’t. It was only ok. Not great. A bit of a mess really. A bit of a damp squib to end the series.

The dialogue is clunky, the film is too long, and the acting is wooden.

Granted, there were some great set-pieces (500ft below the Artic ice and hanging 10,000ft off a bi-plane) but there just weren’t enough of them.

And then there was the AI baddy known as “The Entity” - yes, that really was its name. We couldn’t really avoid the name - it was mentioned 57 times (I counted).

“Ok team. How are we going to defeat “The Entity”?
“I don’t know Ethan.
“Will “The Entity” anticipate our next move?
“It’s “The Entity”. It always anticipates.
“What do you think “The Entity” will do next then?
Etc etc

The Lilo & Stitch remake was better. No really.

1536 @ Almeida Theatre…

Imagine if Sex Education and Wolf Hall had a lovechild, and you’d get Ava Pickett’s 1536—a sharp, sassy, and surprisingly poignant play that brings Tudor gossip to life with a distinctly 21st-century bite.

Stuart and I went to the Almeida Theatre just off London’s glitzy Upper Street last Friday night to watch the bawdy action.

Set in a lush Essex field (complete with a tree that sees more action than a Love Island villa), three childhood friends -Anna, Jane, and Mariella - gather to dish on the latest court scandal: Queen Anne Boleyn’s arrest.

But as they chat, flirt, and squabble, the looming shadow of patriarchal power turns their playful banter into a chilling reflection on the dangers women face, then and now .

Siena Kelly’s Anna is a whirlwind of sensual energy, wielding her beauty like a weapon - until it backfires. Tanya Reynolds’ Mariella, the midwife with a dry wit, delivers lines like “Being friends with you is like being friends with a f***ing horse” with impeccable timing. And Liv Hill’s Jane is the embodiment of anxious ambition, teetering between innocence and steely resolve .

Director Lyndsey Turner keeps the pace brisk, balancing bawdy humour with moments of genuine dread. The minimalist set by Max Jones, all tall grasses and a much-utilized tree, serves as the perfect backdrop for the unfolding drama.

Sure, the play occasionally leans heavily on its feminist themes, and the final scenes might feel a tad overstuffed. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise compelling production that cleverly bridges the gap between past and present .

1536 is a bold, bawdy, and biting exploration of female friendship and the enduring weight of misogyny. It’s history with a wink—and a well-aimed dagger. Catch it at the Almeida Theatre before it ends on June 7.

After The Act @ Royal Court....

Sometimes a thing comes along which you think will be one thing. But it's not quite. It's better.

So it was with four-singer two-musician musical After The Act at the Royal Court which I saw last night with Stuart in glitzy Sloane Square.

A musical about Clause / Section 28 - the homophobic legislation introduced by the Tory Government, you say?  Yup!

Clause 28, commonly referred to as Section 28, was introduced in the UK as part of the Local Government Act 1988. It was enacted on 24 May 1988 and prohibited local authorities from "promoting homosexuality" or teaching "the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship." This clause was later repealed in Scotland in 2000 and in the rest of the UK in 2003.

The musical a verbatim piece using real testimony from those who were there at the time and affected by the events; the parents, the local council staff, the kids, Maggie Thatcher, the BBC News studio where the lesbians invaded, the speeches in The House of Common and House of Lords where the lesbians abseiled down, the schools where teachers couldn't support LGBT children, the suicides and self-harm resulting from the terrible after-affects of that dreadful bit of anti-gay legislation.  Oh, and the fun. The strength, the compassion, and the community too.

The music was good and helped tell the story.  The singing was good too.

When it started we were like oh, ok. This is a bit ‘stagey’.  But as the piece went on we got more and more drawn in. By the end of Act I we were raging.  By Act II in tears. By the end, we were cheering.

Go see.  It's great.

Mild Disappointments…

It was a day of mild disappointments yesterday:-

Lilo and Stitch live action film wasn’t a patch on the original cartoon.

Be at One in Upper St lied to us about not having an ingredient (champagne) for a cocktail when they obviously did. They just didn’t want to open a bottle of it for us, but still wanted you to charge us the same price using Prosecco. Then wouldn’t swap it for something else when we complained.

The 411 Neighbour Bar Stock Market Wednesdays crash bar pricing is a bit of a con. The prices don’t go below the standard price they charge anyway.

First world problems, anyone? 🤣

Oh humanity! Will no-one think of the children?! 🤣

Chicago Trains…

In London, we travel on public transport all the time.  We generally feel fairly safe doing so.

That’s not been the case in Chicago. Even once.

We’ve taken the L train here quite a lot. It’s run by the Chicago train authority (CTA).

And every time we’ve done so, or be at early in the morning, during the day, or later in the evening every carriage has had one or more people who clearly have (untreated? undiagnosed?) mental health issues.

We’ve witnessed people talking to themselves, rocking backwards and forwards, lying on the floor, staring, shouting, violent behaviour, aggression, boxing in peoples faces, pushing, shoving and intimidation. These people obviously need help.

From our perspective it seems a failing of the public health system here in the US that they are not getting it.

In the UK, these people would be taken to a safe place, sectioned if needs be, assessed by a doctor, and not released until they have been helped with a treatment plan, accommodation and/or antipsychotics.

Chicago Food (and Drink)…

Chicago is known for its deep-pan pizza. But don’t let that fool you. They serve burgers too. 😂

Miller beer is a stable as is the lethal Malört spirit. We preferred Modelo beer though. 🍺

Food is served in massive portions. Tax gets added on top. Tipping then varies from 15% - 35% on that. 25% is expected. 💸
