Yet, while it stands as a symbol of Spanish tradition, the bullfighting events it hosts are controversial. The bulls get killed for entertainment.
The audio guide we listened to on our tour said the following, “the bulls that fight at Las Ventas mostly live a calm, pleasant and enjoyable life”
The word “mostly” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.
Yes, the spectacle is steeped in ritual and pageantry, and yes, the atmosphere is undeniably unique, drawing passionate crowds.
But for me the experience of just being there felt unsettling.
I welcome the day when the venue simply hosts concerts and cultural events, offering alternative ways to appreciate its grandeur.
