Leigh Bowery (my age, but taken too early c1994) was an Australian performance artist, fashion designer, and club promoter, renowned for his extravagant costumes and provocative performances in London's 1980s and 1990s club scene.
He founded the club Taboo in 1985, which was the first time I saw him. The place became a hub for avant-garde fashion and music. I was an onlooker really.
Later I saw him again in Kinky Gerlinky - another influential clubnight that began in 1989 at the Legends nightclub.
Bowery's collaborations with artists like Lucian Freud and his innovative (and often scandalous) performances, such as the 'Birthing' act, solidified his status as a cultural icon.
Great exhibition. Many fond memories.
After the show we went out for a lovely Italian meal in Covent Garden and then to The Welly in Soho to drink in the sunshine.
