Cover This...

Yesterday I bought a couple of albums I'd been after for a while; Betcha Bottom Dollar by the The Puppini Sisters and Bande A Part by Nouvelle Vague. Both albums are essentially covers albums, the Puppini's doing The Andrews Sisters and Nouvelle Vague doing punk/rock/new wave as lounge.

Interestingly both albums contain a cover version of the same song: Blondie's Heart Of Glass.

High on my list of 'next to buy' is the Easy Star follow up to Dub Side Of The Moon, the rather wonderfully titled Radiodread (you can listen to samples on that link too). Whereas Dub Side Of The Moon was a reggae reinterpretation of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon Radiodread will be a similar reworking of Radiohead's O.K Computer. Can't wait.

  1. If you are into cover versions, I highly recommend Cosmosonica: Crazy Covers: Volume 1: The Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain covering Ms Dynamite's Dy-Na-Mi-Tee is pure gold.

I saw both the puppinis and nouvelle vauge at the Fruitstock festival the weekend before last, both did heart of glass and were fab. I came out humming it anyway. Really enjoyable performances and great albums. I especially love Panic on the streets of London and the Nouvelle vague version of Bela Lugosi's dead makes me laugh every time. I can also highly recommend the Ukele Orchestra of great Britain. The Miss Dynamite song has been my house's summer theme song. Have you heard the steel drum and cow bell cover of the numanoids' "cars" by Katzenjammers? I can't get enough of it, Got to be the best thing I've heard all year.

  3. Yes, I've got Cosmosonica: Crazy Covers - I'm a bit of a collector of covers version in fact - which it sounds like you all are too!

Will track down Katzenjammers - sounds like a winner!

  4. Just heard 6 full-length tracks from the 'Radiodread' album (Easy Star All Stars' track by track dub reggae version of Radiohead's 'OK Computer') and I've almost wet myself in anticipation of getting my clammy little mitts on the full cd.

Check out ESAS's versions of Climbing Up the Walls and Exit Music (For a Film) at: http://blogsarefordogs.com/?p=178

4 other tracks (Airbag, Let Down, Karma Police and Electioneering) can be heard on the Easy Star All Star player at: http://www.hyfntrak.com/radiodread/fromafriend/

Believe me when I say this is not just a cheesy covers album, it's an intelligent and thoughtful reworking of Radiohead's seminal album. Get it!!!
