The Visit (of The Old Lady Comes to Call) @ Oliver Theatre...

Last night Stuart and I went to see The Visit (of The Old Lady Comes to Call) at Oliver Theatre on London's glitzy South Bank.

Based on the play by Friedrich Dürrenmatt and adapted by Tony Kushner the piece stars the excellent Lesley Manville (her off of Phantom Thread and Mum) and the charismatic Hugo Weaving (him off of The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings).

It was a long, long evening though. Three and half hours, including 2 intervals. Sure, it looked good. Yes, it was well acted. But goodness it was a slog.

The plot is pretty straightforward. A moral dilemma. A rich woman returns to her impoverished childhood home-town and offers a massive bounty for the head of her teenage sweetheart who did her wrong. Will the townsfolk take the blood money?

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

Shall I save you the time, then? So you don't have to sit through all those hours and hours of waiting for the inevitable outcome that you can see coming for the first few minutes of the play? Yes? OK. So yes, they did. They took the money. (You’re welcome.)
