Myrtle’s (belated) 88th Celebration…

A lovely afternoon out helping Myrtle (belatedly) celebrate her 88th birthday.  Lunch at The Ivy followed by Guys & Dolls at the Bridge Theatre. We laughed. A lot. 😅

 

Aldi…

There’s a shop called “Aldi” that’s just opened up near us. Apparently, it’s quite well-known but it was new to me.

 

So I thought I’d pop in just to see what it was all about. 

 

And it turns out I was entering some weird alternative universe where every popular brand I’ve ever heard of has had its name changed. But just a bit.  Same packaging but weird almost-names. It was dizzying. I was laughing with delight.

 

It was like being in some episode of the Twilight Zone or Black Mirror or in Alice in Wonderland.

Roots @ Almeida Theatre...

Last Thursday night Stuart and I went to Diyan Zora directing Roots - Arnold Wesker’s lyrical, impassioned play about a young woman’s journey to self-discovery - at the Almeida Theatre in London's glitzy Islington.

 

Set in Norfolk in 1959 the play tells of Beatie Bryant (Morfydd Clark) returning to her rural home with inflamed political zeal from her time spent living in London. 

 

As the family anxiously prepares for the arrival of her firebrand activist boyfriend Ronnie, Beatie struggles to fit back into her old way of life.  

 

The conflict comes from when Beatie’s radical new ideals fail to land with her traditional family - and in particular her stubborn mum Mrs Bryant (Sophie Stanton). "A child of mine! Wanting to improve herself!"

 

I enjoyed it, Stuart even more so. I think he saw many parallels with his own life.

Chelsea 1 - 1 Arsenal…

Another frustrating away trip yesterday. A full strength Arsenal squad (yes, Ødegaard and Rice were both back) but still we couldn’t seem to get a win across the line. We played well at Stamford Bridge but just couldn’t seem to bring home the bacon. 

Chelsea’s Neto cancelled out Martinelli’s opener making it one each at the final whistle. 

Nice to go with a clutch of @gaygooners of course.

Plucked, Perfumed, and Pickled…

Stuart and I spent the day yesterday making our annual batch of quince jelly, sweetening and bottling up 5 litres of Highbury sloe gin, and making some jars of red onion preserves. 

A lovely afternoon of home cooking warming the whole house with the sweet smell of quince and sloes. 

Mind you, we sampled the sloe gin as we went too. So it wasn’t just the onions that got pickled. 😀
