American Psycho...

On Friday night Stuart and I went to to see American Psycho The Musical at the Almeida Theatre in London's trendy Islington.

Based on the controversial 1991 novel American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis the tale is set in Manhattan during the Wall Street boom of the late 1980s, We follow the daily life of wealthy young investment banker Patrick Bateman whose thoughts turn to murder.

Matt Smith (yes, him) plays Bateman with a suitably (and suited) devilish charm. He can't perhaps hold a tune to quite the same high standard as his colleagues but that aside he carries the day.

The musical perhaps arches its eyebrow rather more than either the book or the film in that it plays it for laughs. But we like a show when the black humour is as dark as the blood is red.

A bevy of original songs are accompanied by a string of 1980s hits; Hip to Be Square, Don't You Want Me, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, True Faith and In the Air Tonight.

If it gets a West End transfer (which is rightly deserves) you should get ticket.

Doctor Who: The Day Of The Doctor...

Stuart and I saw the 50th anniversary Doctor Who: The Day Of The Doctor at the Southend Odeon Cinema.

It was in 3D and a made sure there was no chitting-chatting going on around us. The broadcast was almost live - there was a delay while Strax told us all to shut up and Matt Smith showed us all how to put on our 3D glasses.

The show was great though. exciting, thrilling, lots of stuff for fans and casual viewers alike and uber pleasing to see David Tennant, Billie Piper, Tom Baker's returns. What with the Night Of The Doctor that's two regenerations in one week. And the third at Christmas. Stephen Moffat you're spoiling us.

"Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe's deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them - the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe."

Nightmare in Silver...

Last Saturday's Doctor Who Nightmare in Silver was an utter mess. Neil Gaiman lost it methinks. Underwritten yet over-complicated. Hated the children. Hated the plot holes. Some truly awful dialogue. Filmed in the props department. A complete waste of a cybermen story. Next!

Doctor Who: The Bells of Saint John...

Doctor Who was back on Saturday with a brilliant episode - The Bells of Saint John. Funny, scary, stylish, clever and most of all entertaining. It has a new look, a new tone to the drama and the new assistant, Jenna-Louise Coleman, is going to work out just dandy.

Great to see Celia Imrie on top form too.

Oh and it took a second viewing to realise why the meaning behind the title...

Blink...

Paul came to stay last night, I cooked and we stayed in and watched some telly. We rounded the night off with the fantastic Doctor Who episode Blink. For the umpteenth time.

The Weeping Angels still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Gives me the heebeegeebees.

Shame Carey Mulligan's Sally Sparrow didn't become the new assistant - but guess she had bigger fish to fry.
