Aspects of Love @ Lyric Theatre ...

Last night Steve and I went to see Andrew Lloyd Webber’s all-sung, two act musical Aspects of Love at the Lyric Theatre in London's glitzy West End.

Did we need this London revival of ALW’s partner-swapping musical? I'm not sure. And judging by the announcement that the run will close early I'm fairly sure the West End theatre-going public agree with me.

Yes, it's a rather well written and rather well sung piece. Yes, it's a rather camp amoral romp. Yes, it's got that song in it.

But twinkle-eyed Michael Ball aside, the show was utterly unsexy. Like they were going through the motions. It was egotism rather than passion. Obsession rather than romance.

And what with the current news headlines, having a 14-year old girl (after initial contact at 12-years old) throw herself at a 34-year old man seemed a bit of a misstep. And the whole thing felt off, like a day-old fish.

I can’t help wondering if the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical era has passed. Or is perhaps just taking a break. Waiting for new enthusiastic producers can breathe new life into them.

Let's see if Love indeed Changes Everything.
