A fabulous afternoon at the beach in Southwold, Suffolk with the family.  Brought back fond memories of doing similar in Mudeford in my youth.

Stuart: How was your day?

Jonathan: Gym in morning. Then spent the afternoon dancing around the flat in my pants, listening to and singing along to the Coldplay tour set-list at full volume attempting to harmonise with Chris Martin. 

Stuart: Looking forward to next week, are we?

The Hunchback of Notre Dame in Concert at The Prince Edward…

Last night at the glitzy Prince Edward Theatre London I watched The Hunchback of Notre Dame in Concert with Roger and I am still reeling. 

Quasimodo (Ben Joyce with BSL by Oliver Hewing) met Esmeralda (Christine Allado) while Frollo (Zachary James) eyed revenge and power all to Alan Menken’s soaring score. 

Tunes like Out There, God Help the Outcasts, and The Bells of Notre Dame had us both weeping tears of joy.

The crowd clapped for 15 minutes straight.

Let’s hope a full production is in the offing. 

Four stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ all the way.

Darren’s 60th @ BFI…

Had a fabulous time helping Darren celebrate his 60th last night.  Good times.  ❤️

Brigadoon @ Regents Park Open Air Theatre…

Went to the glitzy Regents Park Open Air Theatre with Stuart, Andrew and Kevin for Scottish snoozefest Brigadoon. 

Or as Stuart called it, Brigadon’t. 

The plot was paper thin and the songs forgettable but the performances were all excellent.

Louis Gaunt and Danielle Fiamanya lit up the stage with real chemistry. Jasmine Jules Andrews and Gilli Jones added sparkle and Cavan Clarke brought great humour. The ensemble danced with full energy and McOnie’s choreography made the mist feel alive under the London night sky.

The story may fade away in the Highland mist - hopefully not to return for another hundred years - but the performers shone bright. ⭐️⭐️

Good Night, Oscar at Barbican Theatre…

Last night Stuart and I went to see Good Night, Oscar at the Barbican Theatre in London’s glitzy @barbicancentre

Genius, gossip, and a grand piano under pressure.

Sean Hayes (@seanhayes) plays Oscar Levant, a brilliant, witty, but troubled pianist booked for a live 1958 US TV interview with host Jack Paar (Ben Rappaport, @benrappaport).

Minutes before airtime, Paar learns his star guest has just been released from a mental health facility and still plans to appear and play. Rosalie Craig (@rosaliecraig) brings warmth and resolve as Levant’s wife June.

Directed by Lisa Peterson, the show is stylish and well-performed. Indeed the acting is great. There’s also a show-stopping piano performance by Hayes.

But its blurred fact–fiction mix takes the sting out of the piece. We never get to see the real Oscar behind the quips and the staged dramatics.
