It Shouldn’t Happen Here / Battleship Potemkin…
Last Friday night, Darren treated Stuart and I to a trip to the British Film Institute to watch a couple of Pet Shop Boys-related films. The first was the Pet Shop Boys’s film It Shouldn’t Happen Here, this was followed by a Q&A with Neil Tennant, and then Battleship Potemkin (a new restored version with the fabulous Pet Shop Boys soundtrack).
It was a great night.
ICHH was as bonkers as ever 😀 Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe both play themselves. Joss Ackland plays multiple roles, including priest/hitchhiker & murderer. Barbara Windsor portrays Neil’s mother, a landlady, & a French maid. Neil Dickson is seen as a car salesman, a pilot, & a chauffeur. Gareth Hunt in is varied roles including Uncle Dredge, a postcard seller, & a ventriloquist.
Neil was very engaging in the Q&A, confirming how the film baffled them at the time and also confirming that they are working on a new version of their Alan Turing piece “A Man from the Future”. Yay.
Battleship Potemkin still packs an emotional punch, 100 years after it was first made.

Last night, Elliot, Darce, Stuart, and I ventured back to 1590 to watch Kit Marlowe and Will Shakespeare spar in a room together.
The vibes: kiss kiss, stab stab.
The set: literally just a table and chairs.
The lighting: blinding.
Edward Bluemel @edwardbluemel is a charming Shakespeare who finally learns how to sit up straight. Ncuti Gatwa @ncutigatwa is a chaotic rock star Marlowe who makes you want to write a sonnet and then set fire to it. This glitzy West End spot in the heart of London plays host to a show that nibbles at greatness but often forgets to chew.
The play tries to bite but sometimes just gums you. Luckily acting is sharper than script.
Worth it for the performances alone, though the play itself could be shorter and lose nothing.

On Saturday Myrtle, Stuart, and I undertook our annual forage for sloes. The harvest was early and plentiful this year.
Who could pick the most in 20 mins? Stuart, of course!

So with over 5kg now de-stalked, washed, and frozen we should be able to make 10 litres of sloe gin. Hic!
