Last night I went to see The Maids at the Donmar Warehouse in glitzy London with Stuart.
This stunning new version of Jean Genet’s masterpiece by Kip Williams stars Yerin Ha (Madame) @yerinha, Phia Saban (Solange) @phiasaban and Lydia Wilson (Claire) @lydiawilson performing a voyeuristic glitter-boudoir of servitude and selfie mania.
The plot revolves and twists around two maids, in the absence of their mistress, enacting elaborate and obsessive role plays of killing her. As their fantasies deepen the line between performance and reality begins to dissolve.
There’s heavy use of Snapchat-style filter live-video and screen projection. The smartphones almost need their own credits in the programme.
Loud. Gauche. And great fun.
