Today we woke up in the shadow of the Arenal Volcano. But that wasn’t going to overshadow our day. Today we hit the Costa Rica wildlife trails full and proper. First a lush jungle trail uphill from the hotel and then a mountainous trek up the volcano itself through an overgrown lava field. And great fun both treks were.
We saw lots of wildlife as you might expect; a rather handsome lineated (red-headed) woodpecker, golden-breasted flycatchers, great curassows, howler monkeys, a forest of angry grass (bamboo), orange orchids, and the magnificent (if a little intimidating) white-throated magpie-jays.
After our treks we were a bit knackered so popped into a hot spring for a bit of R&R. The one we plumped for was a small but well-placed one called Eco Termales. The waters flows from the veins of the magnificent Arenal Volcano itself, so how could it not create wonderfully relaxing warm waters with a high mineral content? We loved it. A few hours splashing about in hot springs with a beer or three was a lovely way to rest after a day of exploration.
We followed it up with some dinner (surprisingly good) and headed home to be sung to sleep by the jungle chorus. A good day.
