Yesterday afternoon Stuart and I went to see Billy Budd at glitzy Glyndebourne just outside Lewes in East Sussex.
Benjamin Britten’s opera, based on Herman Melville’s novella, is a gripping tale of innocence destroyed by malice aboard a Royal Navy warship. Thomas Mole is an affecting Billy, Allan Clayton brings aching humanity to Captain Vere and Sam Carl is a chilling Claggart. We liked it, even if Britten’s score occasionally drifted into the monotonous.
We love Glyndebourne, that gloriously posh English country house with its six hundred year history and beautiful opera house, remains one of Britain’s great days out.
