The Magnetic Fields 69 Love Songs @ The Union Chapel…

The Magnetic Fields 69 Love Songs @ The Union Chapel

Thursday and Friday Stuart and I went to see seminal triple album 69 Love Songs performed at @UnionChapelUK in glitzy Islington by @themagfields and @stephinmerritt

Two nights. Sixty nine songs. One baritone that sounds like the devil singing karaoke in a library.

It is not a gig as it is an endurance test disguised as a love letter to love. And love it we did.

I am still humming “The Book of Love” and crooning “Yeah, Oh Yeah” while plotting revenge on “Fido, Your Leash Is Too Long” and “Absolutely Cuckoo.” The stage looked like a séance conducted by witty goth librarians and the Union Chapel’s acoustics made every deadpan baritone sound like Leonard Cohen was reading bedtime stories from the crypt.

By the end of song 69 “Zebra” the crowd had transformed from reverent cultists to rowdy converts.

The verdict: a cult classic performed like a cosmic joke that you are lucky to be in on. Wonderful.
